Permanent Collection: Housed in the former Atlantic Coastline Railroad depot, the museum is home to the history of Southwest Florida. Travel back in time to prehistoric Florida and see the giant creatures that lived with the first humans including a 12 ft. Giant Sloth! Proceed through time and explorers into the 21st century via the people and events who shaped our area today. Step aboard a 1929 private Pullman railcar, peek inside a Cracker House. Explore the museum in depth with an Audio Tour in both English and Spanish!
Traveling Exhibits: From mid-winter through Spring each year, the museum hosts an exciting traveling exhibit highlighting the history and culture of another people, country, time or era. Previous exhibits have included The Roswell Exhibit, King Tut, Treasures of Eden, the Ted Williams Museum exhibit, Lucy: the Story of Human Origins and the Forbidden History exhibit.
This year, the Museum brings an exhibit 7 years in the making, Tutankhamun: Wonderful Things from the Pharaoh’s Tomb. More than 3000 years of mystery are unveiled in this astonishing exhibit where more than 100 authentic replicas bring to life the Boy King. Explore the spectacle, tradition, history and religion of ancient Egypt as the King Tut exhibit is resurrected. Majesty and mystery unfold in this astonishing exhibit presenting faithfully reproduced artifacts of which the originals will never be seen outside Egypt.
Permanent Exhibits: The museum’s most recent permanent exhibit titled “Land of Giants: Paleo Florida” depicts animals, such as Mammoths, Mastodons, Giant Ground Sloths and Saber Tooth Cat which roamed this area during the Pleistocene Epoch approximately 12,000 years ago. Group Tours: Adult Group Tours (10 or more) are $7.50 per person and Children group tours are $4.00 per child. Please call for reservations.
Special Programs: Historic Downtown Walking Tours are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 AM from January through April, and for groups of 10 or more by special arrangement during the year. Discover the legends and lore of our city and explore the little-known gems of these sites. Adults are just $7 and children $5. Call 239-321-7430 to make reservations (REQUIRED).
Author Evenings: Night at the Museum: an Author’s Evening event is held at the Museum on the 2nd Wednesday of each month September – May. The Fall series (Sept-Dec) is offered from 6:30-8pm and the Spring series (Jan-May) is held from 6-7:30 pm. This event includes the featured author’s presentation; book signing and dessert from Mason’s Bakery all for just $10 pp. The Author’s Evening help raise funds for the museum’s programs and exhibits. Escorted Bus Trips to other cultural and historic sites around the state are held monthly from January – April. A schedule is available for download at this web site. In addition, classes, lectures, workshops, special events and other programs are held throughout the year.
Museum’s Educational Center room accommodates up to 55 people and is available for rent—just $50 for two hours. Groups, organizations and clubs are welcome to rent the enclosed room to suit their schedule.
Research: The museum's Archival Research Center is open by appointment. A museum educator/historian is available to assist you with research and copies of photos, maps, and other materials as available. Appointments are required. Please call the museum at 239-321-7430.
